I have always wanted to live on a farm. After living in Parker for 16 years, we purchased our land in 2017, built the house in 2018 and in 2019 started on our chicken coop and "oversized garden" as our COVID project. As part of the rezoning process required to return our land back to Agricultural use, we opted to take a "shot" at growing flowers not knowing that that would be the start to something incredible!
With my family being farmers from the Mid-west, little did I know that multiple generations of horticulture knowledge has being passed down to me. It all started during my younger years when my Grandpa and I planted would plant a garden in the backyard of our house in Aurora. This invaluable knowledge that he spent years teaching me to understand, has turned into be a bigger gift than I recognized at the time.
When you get to experience the results of our hard work here on the farm, this gift no longer stays with me but is shared with you to experience and enjoy as well. That is the greatest gift of all!
When I first started our farm, it was so exciting to see so many florists talking about supporting local and using more sustainable floral methods by purchasing locally grown flowers. I was so excited to be able to move into this movement within the floral industry as it seemed like a mutually beneficial partnership. We joined the American Society for Cut Flower Growers, the Floret Flower Farmer Collective and other associations focused on providing domestically grown flowers.
A new model for the Floral Industry
During our first year, we were growing a significant amount of very high-quality flowers, I could not believe the stems we were cutting from the field. Believing that locally grown was the way in the floral industry, we were not met with the dedication to supporting local flowers that I had seen prior to starting the farm. This caused me to rethink what our goal was for our farm. After several days of research, we shifted to a direct to consumer model where we were now cutting and arranging flowers that were sold directly to the consumer. During this time, we could not believe the feedback that we were receiving from our customers regarding the vase life, quality, smell and uniqueness of the flowers we were selling. Our high-level of design in our arrangements was something that had not been offered before in our area. A client asked me if we would consider arranging flowers year round and after I thought about it, I knew that was our direction
After taking several floral design classes, investing in floral education and becoming a Certified Floral Designer, I fell in love with floral design. By utilizing our locally grown flowers and using my Architectural background, Prairie Hill Flower Co. has skyrocketed to become the new model for the floral industry by sustainably growing our own flowers for our Florist business. We have been able to reduce the amount of flowers that we purchase by 60% using the high-quality, in-season flowers grown here on our farm. We have been featured in several publications for our business model as well as becoming an industry leader in which we are seeing the ripple affect across the floral industry for our mode.
